Contracts

An employment relationship is created only by a contract. A fixed term needs a justified need.

  • A fixed term is in writing, and is capped at 6, 12, 36 or 60 months, by the reason for it.
  • Trial period on an open-ended contract: the first 60 days, extendable in writing to 120, or 180 for management roles.
INSSSocial security

Contributions to the Instituto Nacional de Segurança Social, from employer and employee alike.

  • 8% from the employer and 3% from the employee, on gross pay.
IRTIncome tax

Withheld by the employer each month.

  • Nothing on monthly taxable pay up to AOA 150,000, then bands from 16% to 25%.
  • Meal and transport allowances are each exempt up to AOA 30,000 a month.
Leave

Sick leave is paid by the employer for up to six months, with a right to recover it from the INSS.

  • Annual leave: 22 working days a year.
  • Maternity leave: three months.
  • Paternity leave: a day at the birth, and seven unpaid working days more.
Work visas

A foreign employee who is not resident needs a work visa, valid for the length of the contract.

  • Non-resident foreign staff make up at most 30% of the workforce.
Ending employment

30 days' written notice from an employee who resigns, and 30 days' notice of a dismissal for economic, technological or structural reasons.

  • Compensation on that dismissal: a month's base salary for each year of service up to five, and 50% of it for each year after.
