Questions about employing in Zimbabwe

Can an employer in Zimbabwe end a contract on notice?

Not freely. Since the 2023 amendment to Zimbabwe's Labour Act, an employer may end a contract only by written mutual agreement, or for a breach found at a hearing under an employment code. Retrenchment has its own route, with 14 days' written notice to the works council or employment council, the Retrenchment Board and the employees, and a minimum package.

Can salaries be paid in US dollars?
Yes. ZIMRA publishes separate income tax tables for pay in US dollars and in ZiG. Someone earning in a foreign currency pays NSSA contributions in that currency, and NSSA's earnings ceiling is set in US dollars.
How is the minimum wage set?
By industry and grade, in collective bargaining agreements published as statutory instruments. Where none fixes an employee's pay, a minimum wage notice under the Labour Act sets a monthly floor, from which agriculture and domestic work are exempt.
